A lot of hardware after the UPS. Test was conducted by pulling off the mains cable. Not that scientific stuff but it got the system relying on the batteries the way we wanted. :) Time was clocked by a stopwatch.
Result for this hardware with some internet surfing etc. while testing was 26 minutes and 30 seconds. You get an audible warning with a visual led flashing when the unit is on battery power only. Beeping started in 10 second intervals and it speeded up to 1 second when the test had been running for 20 minutes. When the power finally switched off there were no additional signals or warning but I think that loud beeping in one second interval will be enough if the user is around.

What model is the best for you? Trust offers a handy online calculator that you can use to check what UPS model would suit your needs the best. Give it a spin and see how many minutes your setup should stay up and running after the mains go down.

If you are after a good quality but cheap UPS for your servers, here is your choice. For desktop use the fan of the unit is bit too noisy but for server rooms or cabinets it suits well. 1000 VA offers a lot of power and it kept our reference system running for a very long time. Hook couple of fileservers after this and they are safe from the power spikes and mains failures. It is too bad that Trust decided not to include the monitoring function to the product. Being able to see the power level of the batteries and possibility to safely shutdown the computers after the unit would have been a definite plus. On the other hand the price of the unit would not have been this cheap. It is great that you now have the possibility to choose this kind of cheap and realiable partner for your system. Not everyone is willing to spend >200 - 300 euros for UPS if there have not been any major storms or blackouts recently. Hopefully this cost effective solution from Trust will get noticed by many because when that next lightning hits near your house... you never know what might happen. ;) |
