Mushkin PC2-5300
1GB PC2-5300 (667) Dual Pack (2X512MB) CL 4-4-4

"Mushkin's DDR-2 memory is designed for use in the latest generation motherboards. DDR-2 picks up where DDR left off with bandwidth up to 5400 GB/s and plenty of room to grow! These are 240 pin, unbuffered, non-ECC modules. DDR2 consumes 28% less power than first generation DDR allowing for higher clockspeeds and reduced latencies. Includes SPD EEPROM programmed to JEDEC spec latencies of CAS 4-4-4-11. Tampering with heatspreaders VOIDS warranty."

Package

This has to be one of the most innovative ways on delivering memory via mail. Modules are protected between two "bubbles" that are filled with air. Package is also reusable. While the packaging may not have being innovated originally by Mushkin, this unique delivery method sure makes the product to stand out from the crowd. :)

Content

From inside we find two indentical 512MB memory modules, a pen and a metallic case badge. 240 pin modules are covered with aluminum heat spreaders from both sides. With these operation speeds the modules do need this additional cooling to be 100% stable at all times. They also add that little extra to give the modules better overclocking abilities.

I'm not sure if that pen is actually bundled with every kit sold but perhaps one can live without it. On the other hand extra items are welcomed if they don't add any extra to the price tag. Some people like to show-off what they have installed to their setup and the bundled case badge should do the trick quite nicely. All in all a good bundle for memory modules.

"inside the module"

We tried to take off the heat spreaders but the tape used to bond the spreaders to the actual memory chips was very strong. It also seemed to conduct heat quite efficiently. Heat spreaders got very warm during our overclocking tests so they seem to be doing what they are supposed to do.

Info

Info

When overclocked with 3:4 the end result was 693 MHz (346.6*2). Not bad concidering that some reviewing sites seem to have hard time on hitting the advertised 667 MHz with their current motherboards. As mentioned, the latencies are relatively high compared what we have used with DDR modules. You can manually adjust the latencies from BIOS side and override the default SPD values but in our tests these lower latency settings allowed only few MHz overclocks over the default speed. This resulted to very weak performance when compared to higher clocks combined with higher latencies. There have been reviews of DDR2 modules that have reached almost the same frequencies with 3-3-3 that were achieved with 4-4-4 but usually with extremely high voltages. In our tests the voltage didn't seem to play any part on overclockability of these modules. Your mileage will most certainly vary.

Mushkin DDR2 product range

Mushkin offers their DDR2 lineup with both 533 and 667 MHz speeds. In 4200 (533) range you can also find low latency 3-3-3 modules. Single modules can be bought in 512MB or 1GB capacity and in kits as 1GB and 2GB sets. Dual packs are very usefull when you want to run your system with dual channel, giving you total of 128 bit wide data bus. Current products and prices on Mushkin DDR2 modules can be found from Mushkin's DDR2 pages.
