"Since mid-2003, Corsair has been involved with DDR2 development through the JEDEC association, which establishes industry standards for electronics. Our participation has allowed us to be among the first companies to reach the market with DDR2 memory modules. We’re calling the family XMS2. Initial product offerings will look similar to our classic XMS memory. "

Package

This is the standard package that Corsair have used for their TwinX kits for a long time. Nothing special here, moving on.

Bundle... what bundle? Corsair doesn't offer any extras with the product but after all, these are memory modules your are buying so who cares, right?

XMS has been the brand for Corsair's Xtreme Performance lineup. Perhaps it is only natural to call these new DDR2 modules XMS2. You can find these in standard, PRO and TWINX formats. Standard modules come with either Platinum or black heat spreaders. PRO modules are platinum in colour and have these fancy activity leds that you can see flashing depending on the level of activity within the module. TWINX kits include two matched memory modules that will give you best possible stability and performance when running your setup with dual memory channels.

All these variations will offer you a choice of PC2-4300 or -5400 modules. 4300 also includes the low latency versions (3-3-3-8). As a little difference from Mushkin, Corsair also offers DDR2 modules with the capacity of 256MB. Corsair's Current DDR2 modules and combinations of them can be seen from Corsair's XMS2 pages.

Closeup

Thermal paste between the memory chips and the heat spreaders differs a lot from the tapes that Mushkin uses in their products. I'm not sure if that amount of termal paste will improve things or not but everything seemed to work just fine in all our tests.

Info

Info

SPD data gives us correct information about the speed of the modules. For some reason Mushkin's modules were not so lucky but this maybe an issue with CPU-Z program used to show the information. On the other hand, the SPD Timings table shows the latencies to be 4-5-5-15 for the XMS2 which is quite interesting.

Corsair's XMS2 TWINX PC2-5400 modules were able to reach the same operating frequency as did the Mushkin's modules. 693 MHz (346.6*2) is a good result for these modules that represent the first generation of DDR2 system ram. It is also interesting to note that this was the highest stable and almost highest anything speed that we received. Increasing the voltage for DDR to 2.10 and 2.05 for the chipset didn't seem to do any major difference and the highest FSB that we managed to bring to the windows desktop was 267 MHz. Only reason why I'm even mentioning this 267 MHz is because of this very small difference of 7 MHz that was achieved by rising the voltages from 1.9 to 2.15 on DDR side and 1.8 to 2.05 on chipset. Not safe values and they didn't bring any gains either.
