Samsung takes a more conservative approach on the looks of the drive than many other companies. There are no flashy stickers or brightly painted logos here. This will appeal to many eventhough the drive itself will not be seen in majority of setups after the installation.

Bottom of the unit contains the usual data like the name, type and the capacity of the drive.

Inside

Usually it is no problem on getting inside one of these SSD units but Samsung have made things bit more difficult. The screws are not your typical phillips head kind and also two of them are hidden behind that large sticker visible in the previous photo.

SSDs do not look that special when opened up. Just a single printed circuit board with bunch of controller and memory chips placed together. There is a lot of empty space inside the drive enclosure itself, thanks to the ever increasing efficiency in chip design.

From the circuit board we can identify the Samsung MEX controller chip that operates at 400 MHz. This triple-core ARM Cortex R4 chip offers a lot of the same functionality that the previous MDX controller that was used in the original 840 series. Most notably it have been upgraded to handle the SATA 3.1 spec, thus enabling features like queued TRIM commands.

Different capacity drives in the 840 EVO lineup have have different amount of cache RAM built-in. 120 GB have 256 MB of cache memory, 250 GB and 500 GB drives have 512 MB of cache memory and the 750 GB and 1 TB drives offer one gigabyte of this sweet stuff.
